Canvas and vinyl project

I’ve decided it is finally time for me to jump on board the vinyl craze!  I have had some vinyl for a few years and actually made an etched block decoration as a Christmas gift 3 or 4 years ago, but have done nothing with it since.  I really like all the subway art projects on craft blogs and in stores so I thought I’d give that a try.  My project is actually scraplifted from a sign I saw at church last Sunday.  🙂

First I painted an 8×10 canvas with 2 coats of acrylic paint and set that aside to dry. Next I created the phrase in Design Space using a font from the CTMH Artfully Sent Cricut cartridge.  I used my Explore to cut the phrase out in Cricut vinyl and then applied it to the painted canvas.

I had trouble getting the vinyl to come off the transfer tape and stick to the canvas.  I even added a layer of Mod Podge to see if that would help, but it didn’t.  It took a long time to peel each letter off and press it on the canvas.   Maybe I needed a different type of vinyl?  Anyway, I finally got it adhered.  I applied 2 more coats of Mod Podge because I do not want those letters to ever come off!  As an added touch I put a border at the bottom and the top.  I finished it off by sanding slightly on the brown paint to give it a distressed look.

Overall I’m happy how it turned out.  I made a couple other similar projects last weekend also.  Instead of leaving the vinyl on the canvas, I used the letters as a stencil and painted over them.  I removed the letters before the paint was completely dry to avoid causing cracks in the paint.  Here are the other two I made.

Thanks for joining me on my vinyl saga!
